{February 26, 2009}   Week 7, 8 & 9 (Morphology)

For these three weeks, we are struggling learn morphology. Although on the previous time, we had learn it in “LITERASI BAHASA’ course, but for me the range of ideas for English language is quite different. Anyway, I am sure that may be it will bring new ideas in learning morphology in English language.

For week 7, we are learning about bound and free morpheme. As usual, we are concentrating listen the lecture of free and bound morpheme. At first, I am blurring about it. After my lecturer giving some example, I manage to understand what free and bound morpheme is. I realize that there another three “unique” morpheme that I learned. There are three special morphemes such as monomorphemic, dimonophemic and polymorphemic. Besides that, I also learned new words that I never heard it before such as “affix”, “suffix” and “prefix”. After check the meaning, finally I got the idea of these three words. It is not a big deal for me anymore to understand the three words now.

In week 8, we continue learn morphology more detail. This time, we are taught about inflection morpheme, derivational morpheme and allomorphs. Three of this morpheme is not connected to each other. Inflection morpheme means that the affix used to change or functions of the word. For example walk ca be walks, sleep can be sleeping and more. For derivational morpheme, it is about make a new word. For instance, protect –protective, protect-protection and more. For allomorphs, it also about the same words has to produce the sound differently. For example, box-boxes, eat –ate and others. From here, I can conclude that, three of this morpheme are important to learn so that we can see the differ of the meaning of words, how the words can be change and the functions also change, the way to pronouns the sound system also different.

In week 9, I can consider that the highest level in learning the grammar. Here, we are learn about word structure and word formation phrase. Before we start this sub-topic, we also learn some basic ideas of grammar rule that we should take into account in order to improve our grammar. I found that it is more on analyze and identify the phrase, emphasize on make a sentence, learn about major and minor words and tree diagram. Although at first I thought that the grammar is so confusing because it has a rule to make a sentence. But, after learn the tree diagram; I realize to make a simple sentence is easy to do. At the same time, I can learn about how identify the grammar in a sentence. I also felt enjoy during lecture because we have opportunity to brainstorming our brains where we need to make a simple sentence and analyze it in order to show our understanding of this topic. This strategy is quite effective because we can detect how far we are understood about the topic that we learned.

As a conclusion, learning morphology is a first step to know more detail about English language. From here, I had got a new idea in improving grammar. At the same time, I can learn what is the correct way to pronouns some words using the speech organ.



For this week, we are learning about speech organ which we use for produced sound. As for me, this topic is quite interesting because we are together to learn how to pronoun some word, vowels and consonants. Besides that, dictionary is the best reference to guide us in order to improve our pronunciation in English. Although some time, I felt that using dictionary is a good habit if we want to be a great English teacher, but, I found that some of the word are not much relevant to use in our Malaysian education system. Other than that, we also have a task which is minimal pair. At first receive the task, my mind is blur and do not know what to do. For me, this task quite difficult because I know what level of my grammar. Therefore, I always make a discussion among my group members what should we do? How to complete the task?
I felt lucky because most of my groups are very tolerant in doing group work activity. It makes me felt comfortable to do the task together with them. Although sometime I am blurring, but at least they willing sharing with me on how to identify the words of minimal pairs.
Last but not least, I felt very happy because our group success to complete the minimal pair. What makes me felt satisfied is the way we learn English is by sharing; correct the mistake and giving some advice to one another.

{February 9, 2009}   Reflection week 4 and 5

For this week, we are learn about morphology where I think that a lot of new knowledge that I had learned. Personally, I realize that my grammar is not so good than my friends because there are a lot of things that I felt that so strange to me. However, I always think positively and take the challenge to improve my grammar. After go through the lesson, I felt enjoyed because some of the topic just a revision only. Why am I said that? It is because I had learned some of the topic during foundation course in the past. Besides that, I also felt lucky because I had go through the ELS course for two semester which for me the courses really help me in improving my grammar. Therefore, I doesn’t care what others people perceptions about ELS Course. Although, in the past my Muet is so poor but I realize that it is not the end of the world because everyone have different potential and weakness. From that, I try to change my attitude where I start to learn grammar and develop my communication skills. Thanks to my friends because always by my side to help me in order to improve my English. I so glad because have a lecturer that very concern about me where always give some advise to me.

Learning the morphology is something fun because I have a chance to learn more detail about English. Some people said that learning is life long process therefore in my opinion, whatever things that we learned before is always related with what we are going to learn in the future. To me, English is unique than “BAHASA MELAYU” because English is the only language that we can use to communicate with people around the world.

Last but not least, I really enjoyed learn English because it is something fun. The topic that I really like is pronunciations the words (sound system). Although some of the vowels and consonants can be pronoun so funny, but at least I can improve my pronunciation better than before.

 



{January 20, 2009}   reflection for week 1,2&3

For this semester, i had learned about English for languages teachers. i am so glad because i has a good chance to improve my English. For the first week, i had learned about definition of language and culture. For me, learning language is important so that we can deliver our messages to other. Furthermore, it also can enhanced a basic understand about something that we need to know in our daily life. Besides that, i am so excited during English lesson because i had opportunities to share how to pronoun a sentence through my mother tongues to my friends. For me, sharing is the best way to learn from each other. Honestly, i really felt good to learn English now because i have a lot of friends who willing to teach and encourage me to improve my English if compare to previous time.

For week 2, we learned about functions of language and non-verbal communication. i really enjoy learned English this week. it is because this week we need to present about  3minutes mime. For me, this is an interesting activity because it needs a lot of action and messages that we need to consider. Anyway, the mime activity teaches a lot of thing for me. Personally, i felt that teamwork is the good way to make sure the thing is done perfectly. Besides that, we also need to be an open minded person whereby able to accept others opinions. However, i felt lucky because have a good members where we really enjoy performed our mime activity.

For week 3, we are learned about language and communication topic. From this topic, we need to present a slide show regarding how cultures affect English language and tongue twisters. After presented the PowerPoint, i found that we are doing not have much research and facts that can defend our point of view. However, after listened comments from the lecturer, we started to do some research regarding to the topic. From there, i had learned that as a teacher, we need aware what is happened around us and always up to date with some issue that related with our education system. Other than that, we also presented about tongue twisters. I so happy learned tongue twisters because i found that it is something unique if comparing to learn “bahasa melayu”.Although, some of the sentences is hard to pronoun, but it is something unique to learned. Anyway, i am proud of me because I had created my original tongue twister which is “she rushes to push the shoes on the shelves.” That’s the wonderful things that i learned from week 3. I really appreciate every single word of English that i had learned.
